HOW TO SPOT ORIGINAL ANKARA

I hope we all know originally that Ankara is not from Africa? Growing up, i did not like Ankara fabrics but thought our ancestors invented them, because our parents always wanted to dress us in Ankara. Truth be told, the Dutch initially manufactured Ankara for the Indonesian market. Ankara designs are an imitation of Indonesian batiks that were locally made in Java, Indonesia. However, years later, the Europeans introduced these fabrics to African markets. Today, Dutch prints are predominant in Africa.

Ankara is indeed unique and versatile. Despite this uniqueness, you can be buying the fake one, or lets say less original or cheaper one at a premium price. The difference between the two is easy to spot if you're an Ankara regular though.

So many fabrics today carry Ankara designs but are not cotton. Many people mistake silk, satin or even bolognan for Ankara. They really shouldn't be blamed as anyone can fall a victim as a result of similar prints. The prints can be confusing, especially if it bears some resemblance with original Ankara.

Ankara fabrics are strong. They are widely used in the bagging and shoe making industry. With high-tech production equipment, Ankara is used in making quality and durable shoes. Ankara is not too thick or too soft.

Ankara is smooth to human touch and soft on skin. The prints are made through a wax-resist dyeing technique called BATIK. Such high standard print are resistant to scratches or abrasive movement.

The next time you wanna buy Ankara, go with a coin. Scratch the fabric lightly with the coin. If a mark or a sign that someone touched it appears, it’s not genuine. Original Ankara fabrics possesses excellent resistance.
